'The Birds of New Holland' (2017-2018) Folio Slideshow

‘The Birds of New Holland’ is a suite of 24 hand-coloured etchings created throughout 2016 and 2017. The folio was designed as a contemporary accompaniment to J.W. Lewin’s folio of the same name, which was produced in 1808 in the newly established Port Jackson colony (Sydney). The work aims to trace a direct link between Lewin’s historical folio and a contemporary survey of the area’s avian fauna, investigating both changes in ecology as well as our attitude and interpretation of nature. The suite of prints engages not only with contemporary visions of ecology but also Australia’s colonial, antipodal history and the European traditions of museuming and scientific quantification imposed on the country’s flora and fauna.

First the image is initially sketched onto the paper in pencil. Secondly, line work is applied with an ink pen over the pencil lines which are then rubbed out. After the pen work is completed and allowed to completely dry the colour is applied to the image using washes of watercolour paint. The original drawing is life-size and stands over one meter tall.

'From Here To Antiquity' (2014) - Exhibition Montage

At the end of 2013 I was invited to travel to Greece with an archeological survey team doing a study of the ancient site of Troizen in the Peloponnese. I worked on location as an artist making studies of the site’s artefacts, history, excavation and landscape. This exhibition titled 'From Here To Antiquity - Studies from ancient Troizen and wider Greece' incorporates work completed in Troizen as well as drawings and etchings of other Greek antiquities witnessed on my later travels throughout Europe. The nearly 40 works include graphite drawings, pen and ink work, watercolour painting and a number of etchings. The works were exhibited at 'Australian Galleries' in Sydney in November 2014. The video is ideally viewed in full screen at 1080p HD (high definition) mode.
